Historical Marker Unveiling

Pond Spring: The General Joe Wheeler Home, Hillsboro, Alabama

Pond Spring, the Friends of the General Joe Wheeler Foundation, and the Alabama Historical Commission invite you to the dedication of two refurbished historical markers and new museum sign on Saturday, April 29 at 2:00 pm.

Speakers scheduled to attend the ceremony include U.S. Representative Robert Aderholt (if schedule permits), State Senator Arthur Orr, State Representative Ken Johnson, Lisa D. Jones, Executive Director of the Alabama Historical Commission, Red Cross North Alabama Executive Director Kris Anderson, and Scotty E. Kirkland, Chair of the AHA Historical Marker Committee.

“The Friends of the General Joe Wheeler Home have worked diligently over the past few years to enhance the visitor experience at Pond Spring,” said Mitchell Morris, who is a member of the Friends group. “We have made many improvements to the site including clearing the land around the pond, which will be restored to its early twentieth century garden landscape. People can now see the Wheeler Home from the road. Having an attractive entrance sign, with newly refurbished historical markers, will also certainly help in this regard. We are excited to host our distinguished guests who will participate in the celebration of our achievements."

Last summer, the Alabama Historical Association’s Historical Marker Committee wrote a grant proposal to the Alabama Department of Tourism to refurbish approximately fifty of their older markers, in preparation for the celebration of Alabama’s Bicentennial.

“The historical markers honoring General Wheeler and his daughter Annie Wheeler represented these two influential people at Pond Spring for many years, and were beginning to show their wear-and-tear.” said Site Director Kara Long. “We are very grateful to the Friends of the General Joe Wheeler Foundation, the Alabama Department of Tourism, and the Alabama Historical Association for restoring these markers. They, along with our new entrance sign, are a much needed addition to the museum property.”

Refreshments provided by the Friends of the General Joe Wheeler Foundation will be served following the event.

Pond Spring is an historic property of the Alabama Historical Commission and is located in Lawrence County in Hillsboro, three miles east of Courtland, on Alabama Highway 20 (US Alt. 72).
