ALABAMA HISTORICAL COMMISSION ANNOUNCES 2021 GRANT PROGRAM
Jul 21, 2020  -  The Alabama Historical Commission, the State Historic Preservation Office, has opened its 2021 Grant Program with funds appropriated by the Alabama Legislature. Historic sites meeting the eligibility can submit applications now through August 21, 2020.
STATE OF ALABAMA COMMITS $1 MILLION TO CLOTILDA PRESERVATION
Jul 16, 2020  -  For more than twenty years, the Alabama Historical Commission – the State Historic Preservation Office – has been supporting the effort to find the Clotilda, issuing permits and grant funding to archaeologists and firms since 1997. Now that the vessel has been identified by scientific experts contracted by the Alabama Historical Commission and National Geographic Society, the agency has been focused on being methodical and deliberate with all considerations for its preservation. Thanks to the support and funding from Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama State Legislature, AHC will move forward with the next stage of preservation beginning October 2020.
FREEDOM RIDES MUSEUM TO VIRTUALLY HOST NATIONALLY BROADCAST EVENT WITH FREEDOM RIDERS AND GOOD TROUBLE DIRECTOR DAWN PORTER
Jul 8, 2020  -  The Freedom Rides Museum, an historic property of the Alabama Historical Commission, will host a special virtual event honoring the release of GOOD TROUBLE, a powerful new film about Civil Rights legend John Lewis. Fellow Freedom Riders Dr. Bernard Lafayette and Dr. Rip Patton and GOOD TROUBLE Director Dawn Patton (TRAPPED, GIDEON’S ARMY) will participate in “Let’s Talk About GOOD TROUBLE” – a live Q&A virtual event held in concert with Magnolia Pictures and the Capri Theatre. More than 300 theatres around the country are carrying the livestreamed event via their platforms. “Let’s Talk About GOOD TROUBLE” is free and will take place virtually via Facebook on the Freedom Rides Museum Facebook page, Magnolia Pictures Facebook page, or at https://bit.ly/GOODTROUBLE on Thursday, July 9 at 7:00pmCST/8:00pm EST.
"TRAVELIN' DOWN FREEDOM'S MAINLINE" FREEDOM RIDES MUSEUM HONORS 59th ANNIVERSARY WITH STORYTELLING SERIES
May 18, 2020  -  The Freedom Rides Museum, a historic property of the Alabama Historical Commission, is proud to announce its virtual storytelling series – “Travelin’ Down Freedom’s Mainline” – taking place May 20-21, 2020 as a commemoration of the 59th anniversary of the Rides. The Freedom Rides Museum has partnered with witnesses, historians, and the community to spotlight the people and places involved and impacted by the Freedom Rides in Montgomery. Statewide, the Freedom Rides Museum has coordinated efforts with the National Park Service Freedom Riders National Monument and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to pay homage to the men and women involved in the Freedom Rides campaign that crossed Alabama and changed the world in the summer of 1961.
