"TRAVELIN' DOWN FREEDOM'S MAINLINE" FREEDOM RIDES MUSEUM HONORS 59th ANNIVERSARY WITH STORYTELLING SERIES
May 18, 2020  -  The Freedom Rides Museum, a historic property of the Alabama Historical Commission, is proud to announce its virtual storytelling series – “Travelin’ Down Freedom’s Mainline” – taking place May 20-21, 2020 as a commemoration of the 59th anniversary of the Rides. The Freedom Rides Museum has partnered with witnesses, historians, and the community to spotlight the people and places involved and impacted by the Freedom Rides in Montgomery. Statewide, the Freedom Rides Museum has coordinated efforts with the National Park Service Freedom Riders National Monument and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to pay homage to the men and women involved in the Freedom Rides campaign that crossed Alabama and changed the world in the summer of 1961.
UPDATE: ALABAMA HISTORICAL COMMISSION RE-OPENS "GREEN SPACES" AT SELECT HISTORIC SITES
May 1, 2020  -  The Alabama Historical Commission has been closely monitoring developments related to the coronavirus and Covid-19, following the guidelines and recommendations of Governor Ivey and the Alabama Department of Public Health. As we enter a new stage of response to the ongoing situation, Governor Ivey and public health officials have instituted a phased re-opening strategy. In response, the Alabama Historical Commission will re-open the grounds of select historic sites that have “green spaces” available to the public. These sites include: Fort Morgan Historic Site, Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson Park, Confederate Memorial Park, Old Cahawba Archaeological Park, and Fort Mims. These sites will be open during their standard operating hours, effective Friday, May 1, 2020.
ALABAMA HISTORICAL COMMISSION RECEIVES THREE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE GRANTS
Apr 10, 2020  -  The Alabama Historical Commission (AHC), the State Historic Preservation Office, is the recipient of three African American Civil Rights grants through the National Park Service. In total, AHC was awarded $600,000 of NPS funds for the Freedom Rides Museum, Moore Building, and a multi-site nomination for Montgomery, AL. The African American Civil Rights grant program is funded by the Historic Preservation Fund and administered by the National Park Service, Department of Interior.
UPDATE: ALABAMA HISTORICAL COMMISSION RESPONDS TO COVID-19
Apr 3, 2020  -  Based on a directive by Governor Ivey and the recommendations of public health officials to implement a plan for social distancing and “shelter in place” order, the Alabama Historical Commission has closed its Main Office in Montgomery, all historic sites to the public, and all programs and events have been cancelled through April 30. AHC will continue to evaluate closures and closely monitor the situation.
