Alabama Historical Commission Announces 2022 Grant Program
(Montgomery, AL) The Alabama Historical Commission, the State Historic Preservation Office, has opened its 2022 Grant Program with funds appropriated by the Alabama Legislature. Historic sites meeting the eligibility can submit applications now through August 13, 2021.
AHC will administer a $1,300,000 Grant Program with funds appropriated by the Alabama Legislature in the 2022 Fiscal Year (Oct. 1, 2021-Sept. 30, 2022), for improvements to and educational programming at historic sites in Alabama, and for monuments to commemorate historical events and places.
“The Legislature takes great pride in supporting this program,” said Senator Arthur Orr. “It addresses needs all over the state to help preserve our historical structures – many times taking care of those not-so-glamorous improvements that are necessary in any older structure: a new roof, replacing rotted wood, sub flooring support, and many other similar type improvements. We appreciate the AHC coordinating this important effort to help preserve our state’s rich history.”
Grants will be awarded to public or non-profit entities who own and operate historic sites in Alabama, reflect an education-based mission, concentrate on educational programming, and reflect the geographical diversity of the state. Grants will not be awarded to any entity receiving funding directly or indirectly from the Education Trust Fund or the General Fund. Grants will also not be awarded to any private or for-profit business or organization. Amounts will not exceed $50,000 for any one entity.
“We are grateful to the legislature for their continuing support for Alabama’s treasured historic sites,” said Alabama Historical Commission Chairman Eddie Griffith. “We encourage entities across the state that operate historic sites to think creatively in developing educational programs and in planning improvements that preserve and interpret our shared history as Alabamians.”
Preference will be given to properties built before 1840 to 1943 that are listed in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and to historic school structures.
“Last fiscal year, the Historic Sites Grant Program helped to facilitate several types of improvements, including roof replacements, window restorations, and exterior painting,” said Lisa D. Jones, Executive Director of the Alabama Historical Commission. “The goal of the 2022 grant program is to assist historic sites throughout Alabama with both improvements and educational programming, which will help preserve them for future generations. Thank you to the Alabama Legislature for funding this much needed grant program to help preserve Alabama’s historic sites.”
The Alabama Historical Commission's 2021 Grant Program was so successful the legislature increased funding from $1.075 million to $1.3 million for FY2022.
The Grant Application and Guidelines are available on the AHC website. Applicants must submit an official 2022 Historic Sites Grant application available on the AHC website at ahc.alabama.gov/resources/grants.aspx.
Applications must be hand-delivered or mailed to Heather Thornell, Grants and Contracts manager, Alabama Historical Commission, by Aug. 13, 2021. Faxed or emailed applications will not be accepted. AHC will announce the grant awards in October 2021.
