BLACK HERITAGE COUNCIL FAQs
The BHC works to inform citizens of the need to preserve African American historic places, along with their related history and culture. This is achieved primarily through the historic preservation programs offered by the Alabama Historical Commission including the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage, the National Register of Historic Places, the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register, and the Historical Marker program. In partnership with the AHC, the BHC also hosts educational workshops and preservation forums. The BHC assists the AHC in raising awareness of the AHC's available resources and grant opportunities.
The BHC consists of a representative from each of the state's seven congressional districts, public and community representatives, and at-large members. Visit this page to contact a BHC member in your area, or contact BHC Coordinator Michelle Deberry for assistance.
